For a more cost-effective (or larger) alternative to hotels, you can rent a vacation rental,
home,apartment or room using this site.
Since quite a few guests will be arriving from out of town, we thought we would
compile lists of our favorite eateries and activities around the island. Please feel
free to ask us if you need any more suggestions!
Alan Wong’s
$$$$ - Hawaiian, Asian Fusion
If you’re willing to splurge, order the classics tasting menu with the wine
pairing. Otherwise, be sure to try the steamed clams with kalua pig, ginger
crusted onaga, or the “The Coconut”, a haupia sorbet in a chocolate shell.
Morio’s Sushi Bistro
$$ - Japanese
Reservations must be made several months in advance, so plan early! If you
can, get the chef’s choice (omakase), limited to one party per seating. The fish
here is fresh, fresh, fresh, delicious and affordable.
Side Street Inn
$$ - Local Fare
Try some local food in a casual setting. Our recommendations are the fried porkchops,
kalbi, kimchee fried rice, pocho clams and fried pound cake.
Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck
$$ - Seafood, Food Truck
We drive around the island to get some of this shrimp (2 locations on the Northern side of the island).
You can’t go wrong with the Shrimp Scampi or the Lemon Butter Shrimp. Don’t forget to ask for plenty
of their amazing hot sauce!
Mitsu-ken Okazu and Catering
$ - Japanese
There’s something about the breakfast deluxe combo (fried rice, eggs, bacon, portugese sausage, garlic
chicken, only $7.75!) that gets us drooling. The combo is enough for two people, but you may just want
to be a fatty and eat it all yourself!
Nico’s Pier 38
$$ - Seafood
Their furikake crusted ahi is always popular, along with their other fresh fish specials. They also have
various poke and an array of delicious desserts.
Goma Tei
$ - Ramen
Michael’s favorite ramen shop. Try the tan tan ramen for its rich, flavorful broth.
Liliha Bakery
$ - Bakery, Diner
Haven’t had a loco moco (hamburger steak topped with an egg and gravy) yet? Liliha Bakery has one of the best
loco mocos on the island. They have a cute little diner perfect for small groups. Pick up one of their famous
coco puffs on your way out!
Waiola Shave Ice
$ - Shave Ice
Michael’s favorite flavor is the strawberry and Pauline’s favorite is the strawberry cream. Add some of the
extras: vanilla ice cream at the bottom and top it off with some condensed milk for an extra yummy afternoon treat.
Kuliouou Ridge Trail
5 miles roundtrip, medium difficulty
This hike is Pauline and Michael’s absolute favorite hike. It has a little bit of everything, with dramatic changes
in foliage and a gorgeous, highly rewarding view at the end. Start early when the trail is cooler and less crowded.
Lanikai Pillboxes
1.5 miles roundtrip, easy difficulty
For an easier hike, climb up to the Lanikai pillboxes and head back down for a quick dip at Lanikai Beach with its
powder soft sand. From atop the pillboxes, you will see expansive views of the East side of the island, from Waimanalo
to Kaneohe, as well as a picturesque view of the ocean and the Mokulua islands, more commonly referred to as “The Mokes”.
(For the more adventurous folk, you can also rent kayaks and paddle out to the islands.)
